BUILT TO LAST: INTENTIONALLY BUILDING YOUR MARITAL RELATIONSHIP

24 Jul 2026
Day 42
Proverbs 24.3-4 (NKJV). "Through wisdom, a house is built, And by understanding it is established; By knowledge, the rooms are filled With all precious and pleasant riches"

Marriage is like a building; it is not a one-time project. Some view marriage as just another task to complete, something to check off their list before moving on to other things. However, marriage is not a project that gets “done” and forgotten about. Like any structure, it requires ongoing maintenance to ensure it stands strong over time. There's a saying that the largest room in the world is the room for improvement, and this holds true for marriage. No matter how beautiful a marriage may seem, there’s always room for growth.

Another translation renders the scripture another way, Proverbs 24: 3&4 (TLB) Any enterprise is built by wise planning, becomes strong through common sense, and profits wonderfully by keeping abreast of the facts.

Marriage is like an enterprise. It requires constant attention. Without constant care and attention, what once appeared beautiful can begin to deteriorate. Therefore, building a lasting, resilient marriage requires intentional effort.

"Built to Last" isn’t about a passive journey, it’s about being deliberate and proactive in creating a relationship that not only survives but thrives over the years.

There are essential elements that contribute to a thriving relationship, and we will explore some strategies for strengthening the marital bond over time:

·         Purposeful Communication
One of the most important factors in improving a marriage is effective communication. Communication is the lifeblood of any marriage, and without it, a relationship cannot thrive. Partners must be intentional about developing open, honest, respectful and transparent communication to ensure that they understand each other and feel heard. Couples must focus on actively listening, expressing needs, and navigating difficult conversations with the goal of fostering understanding and connection.

·         Prioritising Quality Time Together
Improvement also requires regular reflection on the dynamics of the relationship, and this takes time. Identifying areas that need attention and being flexible enough to adjust our approach are crucial for sustaining growth. Today, people get so busy with work that they hardly create time to spend together as a family. Spending meaningful time together, whether through regular date nights, shared hobbies, or simply connecting each day, is crucial. Intentional time strengthens the emotional and physical connection.

·         Nurturing Mutual Growth and Support
Improving a marriage is a multifaceted journey that demands commitment to continuous growth. The couple must embrace the willingness to grow individually and as a couple. Both partners must embrace the mindset of continuous development and seek opportunities to learn from one another, whether through books, workshops, marriage seminars, or counselling.

There is a need for couples to grow together, supporting each other’s personal development, goals, and dreams. Be each other’s biggest cheerleader and work towards common goals as a team.

Emotional connection.

Making time for your spouse, expressing love through affectionate gestures and physical touch, offering compliments, and providing emotional support can significantly strengthen the emotional bond between partners.

Practising Forgiveness and Patience
A lasting relationship requires grace. Address how to handle conflict, let go of grudges, and forgive one another. Encourage building patience, understanding, and learning to move forward from challenges.

Maintaining Intimacy and Affection
Cover the importance of nurturing emotional, physical, and spiritual intimacy. Discuss ways to keep the spark alive, including regular expressions of affection, respect, and love, even as the years go by.

Improving a marriage requires patience, understanding, and a genuine desire to strengthen the partnership. The beauty of a marriage reflects the effort invested in it. To add more vibrancy and depth to that beauty, continual effort is essential.
