In
a fast-paced world full of career demands, ministry responsibilities, digital
distractions, and personal pursuits, the family, your spouse and children can
unintentionally become neglected. But God ordained the family as a priority,
second only to your relationship with Him. When we fail to give our families
the attention they need, we risk building externally while crumbling
internally.
Many
marriages today suffer not from hatred or incompatibility but from neglect. We
live in a world that applauds public success and silently overlooks private
struggles. The truth is, when we fail to pay attention to what matters most,
which is our spouse and children, we erode the very foundation of our lives.
The cry of the home is not just “provide for me,” but “see me, hear me,
be present with me.”
Change
begins with a choice
The
love Jesus has for the Church was not distant or distracted. He gave Himself.
Love gives attention. In the same way, being physically present without
emotional engagement is not true presence. Whether you are a husband or wife,
your family needs the best of you and not the leftovers. Your attention
communicates love, value, and security. It says, “You matter more than my
phone, my meetings, or my ambitions.” Marriage thrives on intentional
investment. Children flourish in consistent nurture. You don’t build a great
home by chance; you build it by choice.
Principles
for Giving Your Family the Attention They Deserve
·
Recognise that Attention Is an
Expression of Love
Love
is spelt T-I-M-E. You can’t claim to love what you consistently
ignore. “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church
and gave Himself for her.” Eph. 5:25. Jesus didn’t just say He
loved the Church; He gave Himself. What are you giving yourself to the most?
Your career, hobbies, or your family?
·
Godly Stewardship Begins at
Home
Your
first responsibility is not your platform, audience, or employer, it is your
household. “If anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for
those of his household, he has denied the faith…” 1 Tim. 5:8. God
rates you according to how you handle your family life. Therefore, start
treating your spouse and children as your most important “assignment.”
·
Attention Requires Presence
and Engagement
Being
physically present but emotionally absent is not enough. Listen, engage, laugh,
pray, and grow together. “Better is a dry morsel with quietness, than a
house full of feasting with strife.” Prov. 17:1. Jesus was often
surrounded by crowds but gave full attention to individuals; an example is the
woman with the issue of blood Luke 8:45–48.
·
Protect Family Time
Don’t
bring the leftovers of your time and energy home; bring the best. This must be
intentional by setting boundaries. Prioritise family meals and devotion time as
activities the entire family must be a part of. Plan outings and vacation time
together. “There is a time for everything…” Eccl. 3:1. Block out
dedicated “family time” on your calendar each week—and honour it.
·
Children Don’t Just Need
Provision; They Need Your Presence
Children
measure love by attention. The foundation of their security is your emotional
availability. Eli the priest mentored a nation but failed to discipline his
sons, an indication of the fact that he did not give them his time (1 Samuel
2:12–17). The cost was great. The bible says, “Train up a child in the way
he should go…” – Prov. 22:6 But you cannot train in absentia, you can’t
train what you don’t invest in.
·
Your Marriage Is a Living
Message to Your Children
The
way you treat your spouse is how your children will learn to love, respect, and
relate. This can only be done by being present in the home. Prioritizing your
marriage is a gift to your children. “The righteous man walks in his
integrity; his children are blessed after him.” Prov. 20:7
Conclusion
Your
marriage is not just a blessing to you; it’s a model to your children and a
light to the world. You can’t influence the world if your home is in darkness.
Start at home. Love well. Give your best. The world may applaud your accomplishments,
but your family will feel your absence or your presence.
Prioritize
home. Rebuild connection. Give your love a voice through your attention.
Call
to Action: Realign Your Priorities
- Evaluate:
Where does your family rank in your time and attention?
- Repent:
If you’ve been distracted or distant, ask God and your family for
forgiveness.
- Reinvest:
Start small daily conversations, prayer time, consistent family dinners.
- Recommit:
Protect your home. Prioritise your spouse. Be present for your children.
Don’t
gain the world and lose your family. Your greatest success will always begin at
home.
Closing
Prayer:
Father, help me to steward well the family You’ve entrusted to me. Remove
the distractions that blind me to their needs. Teach me to love intentionally,
listen deeply, and lead by example. May my spouse and children see You through
my attention, my presence, and my care. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Couple’s
Prayer Together:
Lord,
thank You for the gift of each other and our children. Help us to cherish and
prioritize our home above all earthly pursuits. Teach us to be present, not
just in body, but in heart and mind. May our love reflect Your love; intentional,
sacrificial, and joyful. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
