STUDY THE WORD TOGETHER

27 Jul 2026
Day 45
2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV‬) "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth"

The Bible declares, "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path" (Psalm 119:105). The Bible is God’s Word; it is God speaking to us today. This is why it has the capacity to enrich the lives of believers and can profoundly impact the marriages of those who trust in the power of His Word.

Studying the Word of God as a couple enhances spiritual growth. This shared practice deepens understanding and insight, as "iron sharpens iron" (Proverbs 27:17). By discussing Scripture together, spouses gain clarity and alignment in their values and beliefs, fostering unity in their relationship and ensuring they walk together in the light of biblical principles.

Additionally, reading and reflecting on the Bible together strengthens emotional and relational intimacy. These moments create opportunities for meaningful conversations that shape character and deepen connections. The resulting emotional closeness contributes to a more resilient and intimate bond between spouses.

The Word of God also offers wisdom, encouragement, and comfort during life’s challenges. When couples study the scriptures together, they provide mutual support and reassurance, reinforcing their partnership and trust in God’s promises. Moreover, the Bible’s teachings on forgiveness, love, and conflict resolution provide practical tools for navigating marital disagreements with grace and understanding.

Joint study of Scripture also builds accountability. It reinforces a shared commitment to integrity, righteousness, and the pursuit of God’s will, guiding couples to live with purpose and a strong moral foundation.

By studying God’s Word together, couples grow individually and as a team, creating a solid foundation for their marriage. Let the study of scripture be a regular practice in your relationship, tapping into its transformative power to strengthen your union and align your lives with God’s perfect plan.

Maximizing the Study of the Word

To truly maximize the study of the Bible, you must first view it as God speaking directly to you. The written scriptures, referred to as Logos, become life-transforming when the Holy Spirit quickens them into Rhema—the Word brought alive and made applicable to your specific situation. This is when the Bible becomes more than words on a page and transforms into divine guidance tailored to your life’s challenges.

Let me share an experience. One morning, my husband and I, as was our custom, were studying God’s Word before heading to work. We had just started using the New King James Version (NKJV) of the Bible and were following a study plan from its pages. At the time, he worked in banking, and I was serving as the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of a group of ten companies. That morning, the assigned passage was Deuteronomy 21:1–9, which describes the elders' actions in resolving the mystery of an unsolved murder.

At first, the reading seemed disconnected from my immediate needs. My treasury department urgently required ₦2M that morning. I thought, what does solving the mystery of an unknown murderer have to do with my pressing financial need? But as I meditated on the passage during my drive to work, verse 5 leaped out at me:
"Then the priests, the sons of Levi, shall come near, for the Lord your God has chosen them to minister to Him and to bless in the name of the Lord; by their word every controversy and every assault shall be settled."

The phrase “every controversy and every assault shall be settled” became my Rhema. I prayed a simple prayer: “Lord, where do I go this morning to raise ₦2M?” The Holy Spirit directed me to two banks.

At the first bank, they immediately approved a ₦1M overdraft. However, the second bank was facing a deficit from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and couldn’t possibly grant an overdraft. Standing in the bank, I prayed according to the Rhema from that morning: “Every controversy and every assault shall be settled.” Moments later, my accounts officer approached me smiling and approved an overdraft of ₦1M.

This experience demonstrated how the Rhema from God’s Word can provide clarity and solutions for life’s challenges.

Practical Steps for Couples to Study the Word Together

  •          Set a Regular Schedule
Decide on a consistent time to study the Word together, whether daily, weekly, or a few times a week. Early mornings or evenings often work well, depending on your routine. The key is to prioritise and commit to this time.

  •          Choose a Study Method
Select a method that works for both of you:

    • Chapter-by-Chapter: Read and discuss one chapter at a time.
    • Topical Study: Focus on specific topics like love, forgiveness, or faith.
    • Devotional Reading: Use a couples’ devotional guide for structure.
    • Bible Study Plan: Follow a yearly or monthly reading plan together.
  •          Prepare Individually

Read and meditate on the selected scripture individually beforehand. This ensures each person comes to the study with personal insights to share.

  • Pray Before Starting
Begin with prayer, asking the Holy Spirit for understanding and guidance. This sets the tone for a spiritually enriching experience.
  • Read Aloud Together
Take turns reading the passage aloud. Hearing the Word spoken can provide new perspectives and enhance comprehension.
  • Discuss and Reflect
Share what stands out to each of you, including:
    • How the scripture applies to your marriage and personal lives.
    • Any questions or revelations from the passage.
    • Practical steps to live out the teachings.
  • Use Study Tools
Incorporate resources like study Bibles, commentaries, or online tools to gain deeper understanding of the text.
  • Set Goals Together
Decide on actionable steps based on what you’ve studied. For instance, if the scripture focuses on forgiveness, identify areas in your relationship where forgiveness is needed.
  • Pray Together
Conclude your study by praying over the insights gained, asking God to help you apply them in your marriage. Include thanksgiving for the Word and for each other.
  • Keep Each Other Accountable
Encourage one another to live out what you’ve learned and revisit key points in future studies to track growth and progress.
  • Be Flexible and Patient
Life can be unpredictable, so remain flexible if your schedule gets disrupted. Encourage each other and focus on consistency rather than perfection.

By implementing these steps, you can create a meaningful and transformative habit of studying God’s Word together, enriching your marriage and deepening your spiritual connection.
