Communication: The Lifeline of Every Relationship Part 2

Day 10
Ephesians 4:15

Components of Effective Communication

Openness: Openness involves having an attitude of transparency—having "nothing to hide." Let your conversations be sincere, without lies or half-truths. As the saying goes, “A half-truth is a whole lie.” Openness breeds trust. Isaiah 58:7 reminds us not to hide ourselves from our own flesh.

Trust: Trust means having full confidence, faith, and assurance in someone. Trust is precious and must be maintained. Once broken, it is difficult to rebuild. Proverbs 31:11 speaks of the husband who safely trusts in his wife, ensuring he has no need for spoil.

Understanding: Homes are established on understanding. Understanding allows you to read between the lines, interpreting eye movements and voice tones. Without understanding, there will be misunderstandings, where couples read unhealthy meanings into actions or inactions. Proverbs 24:3 says, "Through wisdom is a house built, and by understanding it is established."

Commitment to Speaking at the Right Time and in the Right Mode: Effective communication requires the right timing and setting. Proverbs 15:23 states, "A man hath joy by the answer of his mouth: and a word spoken in due season, how good is it!" Communication should also be conducted in the right manner, considering tone and delivery. Proverbs 25:11 says, "A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver."

Benefits of Effective Communication

Effective communication fosters intimacy, self-awareness, acceptance, a strong bond, and enhanced oneness. It involves attentive listening and clear speaking, both crucial for a successful relationship and wrapped up in truthfulness, which is an attribute of God. Truthfulness should be cultivated and reflected in the character of the couple individually. “When you lack character, there is nothing more to you.”

Enhancing Communication

Effective communication is further strengthened when prayer, praise, and worship become a lifestyle for the couple. This brings them closer to God and to each other.
