Malachi 2:15 (NKJV) “But did He not make them one, having a remnant of the Spirit? And why one? He seeks godly offspring…

Introduction: Parenting with Purpose

Godly parenting is not just about raising well-behaved children; it is about raising kingdom-minded sons and daughters who will carry the torch of righteousness to future generations. It begins with parents who are surrendered to the Lord and united in purpose. When couples embrace their divine assignment as stewards of the next generation, their parenting becomes intentional, impactful, and eternal in value.

Understanding God’s Design for Parenting

Parenting is more than a biological function; it is a divine stewardship. God, the original Parent, entrusts children into the care of earthly parents so they may be raised to reflect His nature, His values, and His kingdom. Children are a gift from the Lord Psalm 127:3, but with the gift comes a great responsibility.

According to Malachi 2:15, God joins a man and his wife in part because He desires godly offspring; that is, children who will carry His covenant and character to the next generation.

Parenting is a Divine Partnership

Parenting is a privileged partnership between God and man. The children we are raising primarily belong to God, and we are stewards, not owners. To raise godly offspring is to ensure that the children we nurture resemble their original Parent, God, in character, purpose, and lifestyle, regardless of their earthly circumstances.

As a partner in this assignment, God must not be sidelined. Every decision regarding the children should reflect His wisdom, will, and ways. Attempting to raise children without the guidance of the One who created them is to sign up for frustration and failure.

God is interested in every marriage, not just for companionship, but because He seeks godly seeds. He is a trans-generational God, and His blessings are designed to overflow from one generation to the next. However, those blessings cannot abide on ungodly offspring. God will not pour His eternal resources into vessels that are not trained to fulfil His will.

The place of the home in parenting

The home is the First Church and the place of spiritual formation of a child. Before attending church or youth group, the home is the first altar where children learn about God. Therefore, for godly parenting, parents must:

Ø  Make the home a place of worship, prayer, and the Word.

Ø  Parents are to let the children see them walk the talk of their faith consistently, as this makes lasting impressions on them.

Ø  Regular family devotion times that are engaging and age-appropriate are to be developed.

Parents’ comportment in child training

A divided approach to parenting confuses children and weakens authority. Couples must be aligned in discipline, values, and vision.

Ø  They are to agree on boundaries and consequences ahead of time.

Ø  Present a united front; this means avoiding correcting each other in front of the children.

Ø  Pray and plan together about your parenting goals.

Modeling Christlike Character

Children learn more from what we do than what we say. Parents are the first mentors their children will follow. Therefore, parents must intentionally and consciously

Ø  Exhibit integrity, patience, forgiveness, and humility.

Ø  Handle conflicts with grace and transparency as this teaches children how to resolve differences in a godly way.

Ø  Be intentional about modeling generosity, service, and love.

A Case Study in Poor Parenting: Eli the Priest (1 Samuel 2:12–36)

Eli served in the house of the Lord as a priest but failed in his home as a father. His sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were corrupt, abusing their office as priests and “did not know the Lord.”. Eli rebuked them verbally but never restrained them practically. In other words, he never enforced discipline. God judged the entire lineage, cutting off the priestly blessing from his house.

The lesson here is that your spiritual service outside the home must never replace your spiritual responsibility within the home. Parental passivity breeds generational pain. Therefore, as a parent, be intentional about your parenting. God expects us to discipline, not just advise.

How to raise Godly Seeds:

Raising godly children is a prized responsibility entrusted to us by God. As stewards, we are accountable for how we nurture and guide them. The quality of our stewardship will be revealed in the lives our children lead. If we partner with God and raise them well, the fruit will speak for itself. But if we neglect discipline and godly instruction, the consequences will also become evident in the future and by the time they are grown, it may be too late to undo the outcome.

Parents are a channel through which God’s knowledge, work, and presence are passed down from one generation to another. It’s not automatic and requires:

  • Love and training: Love without discipline breeds entitlement. Discipline without love breeds rebellion. Together, they form a strong foundation for godly upbringing.
  • Early intentionality: It’s never too early to start. Children absorb values faster than we think. Begin from infancy, and model Christ daily.

"Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it."Proverbs 22:6

Pray Over and With Your Children

Parenting without prayer is parenting by guesswork. Covering your children in prayer is one of the most powerful acts of godly parenting.

  • Pray for their salvation, purpose, protection, and future spouses.
  • Let them hear you pray as this builds their faith and confidence in God.
  • Teach them to pray even from a young age, so they can learn to talk to God.

Call to Action:

  • Reflect: How present is God in your parenting decisions?
  • Align: Are your parenting goals aligned with God's purpose for your children?
  • Start: It’s never too early to begin raising a godly seed. Start today!

Your children ultimately belong to God, and you are a caretaker. This is why decisions regarding them must include Him at every level. Any attempt to exclude God is to sabotage the divine assignment of parenting.
