Day 62
Proverbs 22:6 (ESV) “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.”

A Tale of Two Legacies: Jonathan Edwards vs. Max Jukes

Jonathan Edwards (1703–1758)

  • A renowned preacher, theologian, and revivalist during the First Great Awakening.
  • Married to Sarah Pierpont, a woman equally devoted to the Lord.
  • Together, they intentionally raised their children in the fear of the Lord, instilling discipline, prayer, and godly principles in their home.

Legacy (researched by A.E. Winship in 1900): From his descendants came:

  • 1 U.S. Vice President (Aaron Burr)
  • 3 U.S. Senators
  • 3 Governors
  • 13 College Presidents
  • 30 Judges
  • 65 Professors
  • 100 Lawyers
  • 60 Physicians
  • 100+ Clergy and Missionaries

His legacy testifies that generations were blessed because he prioritised godly parenting and spiritual values.

Max Jukes

  • A contemporary of Edwards from New York, Max Jukes was not a Christian.
  • He married a woman of similar character, and they neglected spiritual training and discipline in their home.
  • The family was studied by sociologist Richard Dugdale in the 1800s after noticing many criminals in prison traced back to the Jukes lineage.

Legacy: From his descendants came:

  • 7 Murderers
  • 60 Thieves
  • 90+ Convicts
  • 100+ Alcoholics
  • 190 Prostitutes
  • 300+ Died as Paupers

The family cost the state over $1.2 million (a vast sum in the 1800s) in public welfare, prison, and court expenses.

Key Takeaways:

  • Parenting shapes generations. Edwards and Jukes both had descendants, but one lineage was a blessing, the other a burden.
  • Spiritual foundations matter. A home centred on God produces fruit that endures.
  • Intentionality is everything. Jonathan Edwards invested in spiritual, educational, and moral upbringing. Max Jukes neglected all three.

Proverbs 20:7 "The righteous man walks in his integrity; his children are blessed after him."

Parenting must be with an Eternal Perspective

God is trans-generational. Whatever He begins with you is intended to outlive you. His blessings are never in trickles, they are designed to overflow to the next generation. But those blessings will not rest upon children raised outside His way. This is clear from God’s commendation of Abraham, Genesis 18:19 "For I have known him [Abraham], in order that he may command his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of the Lord..."

Abraham was chosen not just for his faith, but for his ability to pass it on. That’s godly parenting, training children in God’s ways until those ways become their walk.

Ø  Training is a MUST! Today’s Parents must take training seriously and they will have a blessed generation

Ø  They must build intentionally, live faithfully, and raise godly offspring who will carry the torch of righteousness long after they are gone.

Prioritise the Spiritual Over the Superficial

In a world obsessed with material success, godly parents must teach their children that spiritual success is real success. Parents must:

Ø  Teach them to love God more than gadgets, grades, or games.

Ø  Help them find their identity in Christ, not in trends or peer pressure.

Ø  Encourage spiritual disciplines: prayer, fasting, reading the Bible, and serving.

Conclusion: Raise Builders of the Kingdom

Godly parenting is legacy-building. Every instruction, prayer, and correction is a seed that can bring forth a harvest of righteousness. As couples walk together in obedience to God’s design, their homes become incubators for kingdom champion children who will love God, serve people, and shine in a dark world.

Godly parenting is about more than shaping good citizens; it’s about raising kingdom ambassadors. The task is enormous, but God’s grace is sufficient; the reward is eternal, and the fruit will touch generations. Proverbs 20:7 “The righteous man walks in his integrity; His children are blessed after him.”

Trust God's Grace in the Journey

Even with your best efforts, parenting will stretch and humble you. Rest in the grace of God.

  • Don't compare your children or your parenting journey with others.
  • Allow room for mistakes and growth for both you and your children.
  • Remember, God is more interested in your children than you are.

Call to Action:

  • What legacy are you building?
  • Are you raising your children with eternity in view?
  • Will your descendants be blessings to their generation because of the choices you make today?

God is not merely a spectator in your parenting journey. He is the Co-Builder, the Master Planner, and the Divine Resource. When couples align with His heart and prioritise the spiritual formation of their children, they don’t just raise kids; they raise kingdom carriers.
