I've frequently heard people express
how adverse situations experienced transformations by reason of interventions
that came their way in the form of knowledge from books or counselling. They are
thankful that they embraced and applied these truths. Hitherto, they were
ignorant of these truths, and in learning these truths, they have experienced a
complete turnaround in their relationships.
“Oh my God, that post was a real eye-opener," they exclaim! When an insight they hadn’t previously understood is
revealed. I’ve witnessed many individuals who genuinely love and care for each
other, suffering needlessly in relationships, whether pre-marital or marital.
Despite their good intentions and well-meaning nature, they end up complicating
their relationships simply because they lack the crucial knowledge they need
to make a relationship work!
Many people mistakenly believe that
love alone is enough to sustain a relationship. They think that if you’re in
love, everything will be fine, but this is a misconception. Love by itself is
not enough to maintain a healthy, enduring relationship. This is why divorce
courts are filled with couples who once deeply loved each other, and why many
unhappy marriages began with genuine affection. The role of knowledge cannot be
overstated. People act and behave according to the level of understanding they
possess, and no one can perform better than their current knowledge allows.
Therefore, it's crucial to be someone who values knowledge, embraces learning,
and remains a continuous learner.
One key piece of advice I give to
couples preparing for marriage is to prioritise the value of knowledge. It's
essential not only for yourself but also for your partner to value continuous
learning and self-improvement. Knowledge is dynamic and crucial for navigating
the various phases and stages of marriage. This includes understanding the
roles of being a wife or husband, handling day-to-day dynamics of living with
another person, and adapting to different temperaments and love languages. It
involves knowing how to approach someone with a specific background, their
current spiritual walk, and their emotional state. Being well-informed and
adaptable in these areas is critical for maintaining a healthy and fulfilling
relationship.
Therefore, you must truly value and
pursue knowledge and constantly seek to expand your understanding. This means
engaging in reading, researching, asking questions, and seeking counsel to be
empowered by information. The more you know, the better prepared you'll be.
Even if you feel you have a grasp on a situation, remember that your current
knowledge may be incomplete. There are often multiple dimensions to any issue,
including your spouse's perspective, which you may not fully consider.
Therefore, make it a lifelong
commitment to pursue knowledge diligently. Continuously learn, ask questions,
and strive to add value. This dedication to acquiring knowledge will lead to a
more fulfilling and harmonious relationship with your spouse.
